The study trips
In April 2013 the invited architects visited Krumbach for three days, where they formed an idea of the landscape, the people, their traditions and the culture of building. They watched craftspeople at work and were amazed by their skills and the materials used, they met regional architects and building clients and were highly impressed by the combination of tradition and modernity that is characteristic of this region. In the process the culinary delights that the Bregenzerwald offers were not neglected. The international architects enjoyed the lively local inns often until late in the night — and on many an evening they ended up at the regulars’ table together with the skilled workers, the people of Krumbach and the inn-keepers. Architects from throughout the world came as guests, these guests then made architecture — in the process providing plenty of material for discussion

The construction phase
By summer 2013 all the architects‘ designs had been provided and the selected regional craftspeople could start work, Beginning in autumn and working until just before the opening on 1 May, with the generous support of more than 70 sponsors and suppliers the 20 handcraft businesses involved in the project made the impossible possible. With their skills the craftspeople of the Bregenzerwald transformed good ideas into works of high quality. (from Press Release)
